Who’s ready for apple picking? Lewin Farms opens for the season

While most consider Labor Day weekend the start of autumn, Lewin Farms in Calverton is already rolling out a fall classic — apple picking.

The Fresh Pond Avenue location opened its gates Saturday morning for the first time this season, allowing customers to pick their own gala and honeycrisp apples. Other varieties will be ready in a few weeks, employees said.

The stand is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to weekend hours, the orchard will be open Labor Day weekend and during upcoming holidays when schools are closed.

Apples cost $1.75 a pound and can only be purchased with cash. No animals are allowed in the orchard for health and safety reasons.
